Abarth 1000 SP: Body and paint (II); Chassis and rear suspension (III)

The paint and decals are mostly done as the sills need to go on to wrap up the rear suspension. So first the rear suspension which is pretty standard stuff. 


In trying to get the sills and bulkhead in place, I discovered that a couple of nickel silver rods in the rear frame assembly should have been cut a little longer in order for the radiators to sit up high enough. The problem is the pieces labelled 1.0 mm x 37.5 mm -- 40 mm might have been better, but it is much too late for this now.


Of greater interest is the hinge allowing the rear body section to tilt back and show off the engine compartment, which is off by a whopping 11 millimetres. I have fabricated extensions to the supplied hinge bracket and will be deciding if I am going to tiy these up or leave them as is. Material was square aluminum tube, 1/8" x 0.014", and an assortment of M1.4 and #0-80 hardware.

 

Here is the fix in place, with screws still needing to be trimmed to the right length. A coat of black paint will hopefully obscure the crude nature of the fix.


Otherwise things seem to be lining up reasonably OK, with some trimming likely needed around the underside of the nose cone. Good to see it sitting nice and square on all 4 wheels, with no horrible camber or toe-in problems.
